Consumer Rights: Getting a Refund or Replacement

Defective goods, deficient services and the thirty-day notice that most consumers do not know is required.

What the law protects

Provincial consumer protection legislation – in Punjab the Punjab Consumer Protection Act 2005 – protects consumers against defective products and deficient services and establishes Consumer Courts to hear complaints.

Send the notice first

A notice to the provider is generally a mandatory pre-condition to filing a complaint. Give the provider a defined period – commonly thirty days – to remedy the defect or refund. Keep proof of dispatch.

Keep the paper trail

Retain the invoice, the warranty card, any repair jobsheets and the correspondence. A complaint supported by documents is decided far faster than one resting on assertion.

What you can claim

Repair, replacement or refund, together with compensation for the loss suffered. Consumer Courts can also award costs.

Mind the limitation

Consumer complaints carry short limitation periods. Do not let the matter drift while you wait for informal resolution – send the notice promptly and diary the deadline.

General information only

This guide explains the general position. It is not advice on your situation - consult a lawyer for that.
