Your First Court Hearing: What to Expect

Arrive early and find the court

Court complexes are large and cause lists are posted in the morning. Arrive at least thirty minutes early, locate the court number from the cause list, and check the serial number of your case.

What to bring

Your CNIC, a copy of the case file, and any original documents your counsel has asked for. Keep photocopies of everything you hand over.

What actually happens

Most first hearings are procedural. The court may record appearance, issue or repeat summons, fix a date for the written statement, or hear an interim application. Hearings frequently last only a few minutes.

Adjournments

Adjournments are common and are not a sign that something has gone wrong. They occur where service is incomplete, the other side seeks time, or the presiding officer is on leave. Note the next date before you leave.

Conduct in court

Stand when the judge enters and when addressed. Speak only when asked. Let your counsel address the court – interruptions from a party rarely help. Silence your phone before entering.
